An Irish Country House Wedding at Rathmullan House

Rathmullan House has many things going for it, not least its stunning coastal location on the Wild Atlantic Way in County Donegal. It’s a hidden gem, tucked away on the shores of Lough Swilly and blessed by natural beauty on all sides. When couples book their wedding at Rathmullan House, they get exclusive use of the entire property, including 33 individually decorated rooms. This setup allows guests to stay on-site and really get a feel for what makes Rathmullan special.

But it’s the warmth of the Georgian house, the sweeping lawns that meet the beach, and the chance to immerse yourself in a slice of Irish heritage that makes this place truly special.

Holly and Dave were blessed with one of those incredible spring days that reminds you that summer is just around the corner, and they certainly made the most of it.

We had the pleasure of shooting their wedding here last spring – the house is a Georgian property dating back to the 1760s and we found it warm and inviting rather than stuffy or overly formal. Despite its age, the house feels surprisingly comfortable, blending historical character with modern amenities. And let’s not forget how close it is to the beach — if only I’d thought to pack my swimming togs!

One of the standout features of a Rathmullan House wedding is the variety of spaces available for your celebration. From the elegant Gallery Room to the expansive gardens and beachfront, there are plenty of options to create the perfect backdrop for your big day.

Getting Ready at Rathmullan House

The getting-ready experience at Rathmullan House is memorable for all the right reasons. The spacious, well-appointed rooms provide a comfortable setting for those pre-ceremony moments, allowing you to relax and enjoy the lead-up to your wedding.

Ceremony Spaces

Rathmullan House and its grounds offer several options for your ceremony. The Gallery Room, which can accommodate up to 120 guests for indoor civil ceremonies (available Monday to Friday), is a popular choice. There are also various outdoor spots that provide picturesque backdrops for your vows. For those who prefer a church setting, nearby Monreagh and other local churches, both north and south of the border, are available.

Dining and Celebration Spaces

After the ceremony, Rathmullan House offers a range of spots for the reception. The Cook & Gardener Restaurant, with its domed roof and twinkling lights, provides a charming setting for the wedding meal. One highlight is the Victorian Walled Garden, which isn’t just for show—it supplies herbs and vegetables for the restaurant. When they say “locally sourced,” they mean it. The vegetarian dishes I sampled were a pleasant surprise, proving that larger gatherings don’t have to compromise on quality.

For pre-dinner drinks and evening socializing, Batt’s Bar offers a cozy atmosphere, while the Cellar Bar is perfect for continuing the celebrations into the night.

Staying at Rathmullan House

Wedding bookings at Rathmullan House require the entire house to be taken for the night. With 33 rooms available, including superior rooms, family rooms that can accommodate up to five people, standard rooms, and singles, there’s a place for everyone. They even have a room for guests bringing their dogs, complete with a dog bed.

Rathmullan House Wedding Costs

How much does it cost to host your wedding at Rathmullan House? The cost of your wedding will vary depending on the date and day of the week. Do note that the house operates outside of the typical summer wedding season, so prices and availability reflect that. The wedding facility fee starts from €1,000, and there are three menu packages to choose from, starting at €97 per person. The on-site ceremony package starts from €500.

Capturing the Moments

For wedding photography, Rathmullan House offers plenty of options. Whether it’s the nooks and crannies of the house itself, the walled garden, or the nearby beach, you’re spoilt for choice. The ever-changing light adds an element of surprise, keeping your photos fresh and full of life.
